10 Arrested From Assam In Crackdown On Terror Group JeM: Himanta Biswa
Mumbai: In a major nationwide crackdown on the terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), 10 people were arrested from Assam on Saturday, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The arrests were part of a pan-India operation led by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), with searches conducted at 26 locations across five states—Assam, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Taking to social media platform X, Sarma said, “Today, Assam Police, led by NIA, has arrested 10 members of an Islamic terrorist organization.”
Sarma also criticized the Congress party, accusing the opposition of shielding the “ecosystem” that threatens the state. “Whenever there is a threat to Assam, the opposition opposes the government, protecting these elements,” he alleged.
Details of the Operation and Arrests
A senior police official confirmed that in a joint operation between the NIA and Assam Police, nine suspects were apprehended in Goalpara and one from Hojai district. “All those arrested are currently in NIA custody, and investigations, as well as legal proceedings, are ongoing,” the official added.
Assam Faces Real Threat from Radical Elements: CM Sarma
Speaking at a separate event, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that the recent arrests prove the real and ongoing threat Assam faces from “radical elements.” He stated, “A section of people often mock me when I mention these threats, but time and again, it has been proven that what we are saying is true.”
Sarma further mentioned that whenever the NIA takes action against radical groups, it leads to arrests in Assam. “It is a fact that radical forces have infiltrated Assam, and we must remain vigilant,” he warned.
Link to Eviction Drive Violence
Sarma also pointed to a recent eviction drive in Kachutoli, Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, where slogans raised by encroachers, he claimed, reflect “radical training.”
He warned that the indigenous people of Assam face an uncertain future if such radical elements are allowed to proliferate. “The arrests in Goalpara and the Kachutoli incident indicate that in the next 10-15 years, the indigenous people of the state may face deep uncertainty. If this trend continues, it will be difficult for us to live peacefully,” Sarma asserted.
The Kachutoli eviction drive, which resulted in the deaths of two people in police firing, has further fueled concerns about radical infiltration and rising tensions in the region.
