16,962 People Held In Maharashtra For Lockdown Violations

Mumbai: An official said on Thursday that strictly enforcing the restrictive orders, the Maharashtra Police has registered more than 85,500 offences against the lockdown violators across the state and arrested 16,962 people.

While combating COVID-19 and enforcing the lockdown since late March, police have registered offences under Section 188 of the IPC against 85,586 persons who violated prohibitory orders.

Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code deals with disobedience by a public servant to duly order.

In addition, 16,962 people were arrested for violation of norms related to lockdowns, he said.

During the period, at least 161 police personnel, 21 of them officers, have tested coronovirus positive, he said.
He said that at least 167 cases of police attacks have been registered in the state in which 580 accused have been arrested so far.

He said that police have registered 1,237 crimes of illegal transportation and seized more than 50,000 vehicles during the lockdown period.

The police collected Rs 3.02 crore for various offences during this period.
