1st Time Feels Like Northeast Is Part Of India’s Mainstream: Kiren Rijiju

He said that the withdrawal of AFSPA from the areas means that peace has returned in the areas

Mumbai: Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju while addressing a conference over the reduction of areas under AFSPA in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam on Saturday, said that for the “first time” it feels like the Northeast is part of India’s “mainstream”.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on Saturday, the minister said that the Centre’s decision to reduce the areas under AFSPA is a revolutionary decision.

He said that the withdrawal of AFSPA from the areas means that peace has returned in the areas.

He further stated, “For the first time, it feels that northeast has become the mainstream. We always used to hear that the Northeast has to be connected to the mainstream. Today I can say it is already mainstream in the country.”

“After Narendra Modi became the PM, the way Northeast has been given importance to move forward and the way ‘Look East’ has been changed to ‘Act East’ and action has started- as a result of this Northeast has entered a transformational mode,” he said.

The minister further claimed that, unlike Assam, Arunachal, and Manipur, the border dispute with other states will also be resolved soon and now tourists will be able to visit the state with a free mind without any fear.

Earlier on Thursday, the Center relaxed the troubled areas in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) after decades. Disturbed area notification has been withdrawn from 15 police stations in seven districts of Nagaland.

The government has taken this step after improving the security situation in the Northeast region.
