2,141 Trees Felled In Aarey Colony, Construction Work To Begin Soon: MMRC

Mumbai: On Monday Rail Corp Limited (MMRC) stated that the agency has felled 2,141 trees till date following a decision of the Bombay High Court on October 4 upholding permission of Tree Authority to cut trees.

The MMRC said construction works would be done soon to remove the fallen trees.

The MMRC spokesman said that the agency respected the Supreme Court order that it is preventing the felling of trees today.

“No tree harvesting activity will be done at the car shed site in Aarey Milk Colony in the future. Removal of already fallen trees will continue at other work sites.”

Earlier on Monday, the apex court directed officials, not to felling trees in Aarey Colony in North Mumbai, which was being set up to set up a metro car shed. The court said that cutting of trees should be stopped till the next hearing of the environment bench.

The counsel for the petitioners, Sankaranarayanan, stated in the apex court that Aarey is a forest ecosystem and ecologically sensitive area. It has about 5 lakh trees, two rivers, three lakes and rich diversity of flora and fauna.

He said, no court can claim that Aare is not a forest. In response to which the court sought a notification stating that Aare is an ecologically sensitive area or forest.
