26/11 Mumbai Attack Mastermind Hafiz Saeed Arrested In Pakistan

Mumbai: Mumbai terror attack mastermind and Jamat Ud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed has been arrested.

The Punjab Police (Pakistan) Anti-Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested Hafiz Saeed from Lahore when he was going to Gujranwala. Hafiz Saeed has been reportedly sent to judicial remand. According to sources, Hafiz Saeed has said that he will challenge the cases against him in the court.

The Imran Khan government has been under pressure from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) to act against terror outfits and terrorists operating out of Pakistan.

Earlier, the Anti-Terrorism Department of Pakistan said that it registered 23 cases against Hafiz Saeed and 23 others filed a case for using five trusts to “raise funds for the financing of terrorism”.

Hafiz Saeed was first booked with 12 associates for terrorist funding. He is facing 23 cases related to terrorism in Pakistan. Saeed was granted bail as the government had said that he would not present solid evidence before the court.

The action against Hafiz Saeed followed the pressure of FATF, which put the “grey list” of countries on the financing of terrorism.

In June this year, FATF gave Pakistan a deadline of October this year to prove that it has improved its efforts to combat terror financing, which countries will have to face sanctions.

Hafiz Saeed is a UN-designated a global terrorist and is the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba. The US has announced a bounty of $10 million for providing evidence leading to his conviction.
