Mumbai: Police said the 40-year-old widow, who worked as a construction labourer in Nagapattinam, was allegedly gang-raped in a temple.
Two people have been arrested in this regard, police said.
On Thursday night, the two saw the widow going towards her sister’s house, and allegedly dragged her to the temple at a knife-point, he said.
Police said that the two had allegedly gang-raped for hours today and escaped after committing the incident.
He said the woman was injured and fell unconscious.
He said that people living in the area rescued him and admitted him to Nagapattinam District General Hospital.
Police said the rape victim said both were under the influence of alcohol.
After dragging her to the place of worship, they beat her, raped her and threatened her not to disclose about the incident. Both also took the money they had.
Further investigations are on, they added. The victim’s husband died two years ago and she has two children.
