61 Resident Doctors Of Mumbai’s JJ Hospital Test COVID-19 Positive

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors said on Wednesday that 61 resident doctors of JJ Hospital in Mumbai have tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Avinash Dahiphale of the association said patient care is likely to be affected due to this development.

Significantly, there is already a shortage of resident doctors in the city. Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) President Dr. Avinash Dahiphale said that due to COVID, along with the action of many others, will hamper patient care.

However, in a welcome development, resident doctors in Maharashtra, who were on strike due to delays in NEET-PG counseling and other issues, called off their protest after a “successful” meeting with the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER)’s director, Dr. Deelip Mhaisekar, on Tuesday.

Speaking to FPJ, Dr. Avinash Dahiphale said, “The outpatient departments (OPDs) are not running properly due to paucity of doctors. In the last 48 hours, 120 doctors have tested positive; and it is feared that soon more people will test positive; All this is going to put immense pressure on patient care. Therefore, I humbly request the DMER to act expeditiously on the assurance given to the striking resident doctors so that it can be a great support to our doctors.

“Across Maharashtra, resident doctors have called off the strike due to the assurance of replenishment of manpower. We are already working on approximately 60 per cent resident capacity, even as our doctors are testing positive. These doctors have been isolated at respective hospitals or their homes. They have mild to moderate symptoms and the samples have been given for genome sequencing,” added Dr. Dahiphale.
