7 Trekkers From 11-Member Team Found Dead In Uttarakhand, 2 Missing

Mumbai: As many as seven trekkers from an 11-member team were found dead, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar said.

The dead included a woman from New Delhi and nine from West Bengal. The identity of the two trekkers or where they belonged is not yet known.

Talking to the media, Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar confirmed that the bodies of seven trekkers have been recovered, while two have been rescued and two others are missing. These are from a group of 11 trekkers who went missing Harsil.

Meanwhile, five more bodies of another group of 11 trekkers who went missing near Lamkhaga Pass were also recovered, the DGP said.

He started the trek from Harsil in Uttarkashi district on 11 October and was to reach Chitkul via Lamkhaga Pass.

The members of the trekking team include Anita Rawat (38) of Delhi, Mithun Dari (31) of West Bengal, Tanmay Tiwari (30), Vikas Makal (33), Saurav Ghosh (34), Savian Das (28), Richard Mondal (30) and Suken Manjhi (43), all from Kolkata.

The cooking staff have been identified as Devendra (37), Gyan Chandra (33) and Upendra (32) of Purola in Uttarkashi.

Yesterday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) rescued a living and five mortal remains from a height of about 16,500 feet near Lamkhaga Pass in Uttarakhand when a group of 17 trekkers including tourists, porters and guides crossed Lamkhaga on October 18. I have forgotten the way Pass due to heavy snowfall and bad weather.

According to reports, the IAF is carrying out search and rescue operations on a war footing despite adverse weather conditions in higher mountain reaches of Uttarakhand.
