Mumbai: An election official said on Friday that about 83.79 per cent of the voters cast their votes in Cooch Behar and Alipurduar Lok Sabha constituencies in the first phase of the state polls.

In Cooch Behar (SC), 83.88 per cent of the voters cast their votes till 6 pm, while Alipurduar (ST) seat recorded 83.70 per cent of the votes.

Along with ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the opposition BJP and Congress also complained that two parliamentary seats had not been voted in an independent and unbiased manner.

Meanwhile TMC leader and development minister of North Bengal Rabindranath Ghosh alleged that EVMs have broken down on several booths and it could be a part of a conspiracy to manipulate the votes of the opposition.

The ruling TMC and BJP are the main contenders for two seats in North Bengal, while Left Front constituents – Forward Bloc and RSP – and Congress are fighting to prove their existence.

Polling in the remaining 40 Lok Sabha seats in the state will be held in six more phases.
