Afghanistan On Agenda, India And Russia Hold NSA-Level Talks

Mumbai: National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Wednesday met Secretary of the Russian Security Council General Nikolai Patrushev for high-level consultations on Afghanistan amid the Taliban takeover.

The two sides reportedly reviewed the political, security and humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

“The consultation reflects the desire, importance and capability to enhance politico-security cooperation between India and Russia in Afghanistan,” official sources told news agency ANI.

The two also reportedly reviewed the activities of terrorist groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba, and revisited cooperation between Moscow and New Delhi to aid Afghanistan in times of crisis. The development is important as Russian envoy Nikolay Kudashev recently quoted that instability in Afghanistan could spread terror to Russia and Kashmir as well.

Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Petrushev and National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of the Republic of India Ajit Doval discussed deepening bilateral cooperation in the field of security with emphasis on further dialogue on the counter-terrorism track. Attention was paid to intensifying joint work of the both countries’ special services and military bodies.

Following a telephonic conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 24 August, there was an exchange of views on the military, political and socio-economic situation in Afghanistan.

They touched on the possibilities of Russian-Indian joint efforts aimed at addressing humanitarian and migration problems in this country, as well as creating the conditions for starting a peaceful resolution process on the basis of intra-Afghan dialogue.

In addition, the sides agreed to coordinate the approaches of Russia and India to the Afghan settlement in multilateral formats.

The importance of defining parameters of the future state structure of Afghanistan by the Afghans themselves, as well as the need to prevent the escalation of violence, social, ethnic and confessional contradictions in the country, was emphasised.
