Air pollution: Delhi Govt To Deduct Salary Of Negligent Officials

Mumbai: As Delhi is the capital of India, it is also the capital of pollution. Air pollution in India is estimated to kill 1.5 million people every year; it is the fifth-largest killer in India. India has the world’s highest death rate from chronic respiratory diseases and asthma, according to the WHO.

For the betterment of Delhi, the Delhi government took a brief meeting with the executive engineer of PWD and other agencies and took a decision to deduct their salary if they fail to remove garbage and construction waste from areas under their control on 25 Oct.

Chief Secretary Vijay Dev directed the departments concerned and municipal corporations that action plans regarding the city’s 13 pollution hotspots be accorded the highest priority and action points completed within two weeks and also said that construction and demolition (C&D) waste, as well as garbage dumped around these hotspots be cleared within 24 hours and day-and-night patrolling intensified to prevent further illegal dumping. He was very concern about his words.

While talking in the meeting he said “It was decided that executive engineers of PWD and other agencies, who are negligent in getting the dumps (of waste) removed from the roads and areas under their control, should be held personally responsible and appropriate deduction from their salary be effected to send a clear signal that negligence in such emergent situation will not be tolerated.”

Dev directed the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to penalize both the private and government agencies “responsible for the creation of illegal dumps.” The DPCC had already fined about 12.5 crores from government and private agencies.

The chief secretary also directed the civic bodies to use chemical suppressants recommended by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to prevent road dust re-suspensions. More than 300 water sprinklers are procured to stop this dust2dust by municipal bodies.

A DPCC official said it has carried out inspections and prepared an inventory of sites where construction and demolition waste and garbage were found strewn around.

The lists have been forwarded to the respective municipal corporations, PWD and DDA to clear these dumps.

Two days before Diwali pollution level got high decreased wind speed leading to accumulation of pollutants and affecting dispersion The city’s overall air quality index (AQI) fluctuated between 284 and 315 on Friday. Most of the places in the capital recorded the AQI in the “very poor” category, while the situation inched towards “severe” in some areas.

As there is the day and night working of construction site the supreme courts banned that and Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority.

As there is Diwali coming there are various Awareness programs for pollution under control, stop burning crackers are been taken by social workers. There is a hope that after doing and Imposing such things the pollution will be under control.
