Ajay Mishra’s Son Named Main Accused In 5,000-Page Chargesheet In Lakhimpur Case

Mumbai: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, which claimed eight lives including four farmers and a journalist, has filed a 5,000-page charge sheet in the case.

Sources told Times Now that Ashish Mishra has been made the main accused. Mishra has already been arrested in this case.

With the addition of one more name, the number of accused in the case has gone up to 14.

“The name of one more person Virendra Shukla has been added to the charge sheet. He has been charged under section 201 of IPC,” the prosecution counsel said.

A total of eight people were killed in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence that took place during farmers’ protests against three controversial agricultural laws, which have now been repealed. The dead included four farmers, a journalist, two BJP workers, and a driver.

The accused include Ashish Mishra and Ankit Das, nephew of former Union minister Akhilesh Das.

Apart from Virender Shukla, all the 13 other accused including the driver of the three SUVs and associates of Mishra and Das have been arrested and are presently lodged in Lakhimpur Kheri Jail. It is not clear whether Shukla is under arrest or not.

The Allahabad High Court is yet to take a decision on Ashish Mishra’s bail application, while the bail applications of the other accused are pending in a local court in Lakhimpur Kheri.

The SIT had recently requested a local court to add two charges in the case – attempt to murder and voluntarily causing grievous hurt – against Ashish Mishra and 12 other accused already named. The court had allowed the SIT’s plea and ordered the addition of charges including sections of the Arms Act.

The SIT, in a report submitted to the court, had said that four farmers and journalists were killed in the violence on October 3.

The SIT wrote in the report that the deaths “did not occur due to carelessness or negligence” and that the actions of the accused persons were “deliberately intended to kill”.
