Ambedkar Memorial To Be Completed By 2022: Ajit Pawar

The NCP and the Congress, which were then in opposition, had alleged that the memorial work was progressing slowly

Mumbai: In another development, Maharashtra’s deputy CM Ajit Pawar said that the work on Dr B R Ambedkar’s memorial here will be completed by 2022 once all requisite permissions are received for the project.

He also assured that there would be no shortage of funds for the project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the memorial in October 2015.

“We will try to complete the work by April 14, 2022 … the government will ensure that there is no shortage of funds for the project,” Pawar told reporters here.

April 14 marks the birth anniversary of Ambedkar, a Dalit icon and architect of the Constitution. Pawar, along with another Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik, made the remarks after visiting the Indu Mills compound here to take stock of the progress of the memorial work.

The previous BJP-led Devendra Fadnavis government had said that the memorial work would be completed by 2020. The NCP and the Congress, which were then in opposition, had alleged that the memorial work was progressing slowly.

He said some permissions required for the project were not yet received. The deputy chief minister, however, did not specify which permissions are pending.

“These permissions come under the purview of the state,” he added.

Asked about the unseasonal rains in some parts of the state, Pawar said that such an environment is caused by global warming and the government is always standing with the farmers if they waste the crop.

“The farmers have to observe the damage caused by the latest rains,” he said, adding that the government would talk to the district collectors on the farm loan waiver issue on Friday.

Rains lashed some parts of Marathwada and Vidarbha regions on Thursday.
