Andhra Reports First Death Due To GBS As 10-year-old Boy Dies

Mumbai: Andhra Pradesh has reported its first death due to Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) after a 10-year-old boy, Yuvatha, succumbed to the disease in Srikakulam district. This marks the state’s first fatal case of GBS, which has already claimed eight lives in Maharashtra.

Yuvatha initially experienced throat pain and fever, prompting his parents, Chiranjeevi and Roja, to seek medical treatment at private hospitals in Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. Despite receiving care, his condition deteriorated, leading to a GBS diagnosis at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam. He was later transferred to James Hospital in Ragolu, where he was declared dead.

GBS is a rare immune-mediated disorder that affects the nervous system and is typically seen in individuals aged 20 to 40. According to a New Indian Express report, the state administration has directed district health officials to remain vigilant and raise public awareness about the disease. Srikakulam District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar reassured the public that GBS is neither an epidemic nor contagious, emphasizing that while rare, similar cases have been successfully treated in the past.

Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav has instructed officials across districts to implement preventive measures and educate the public on recognizing GBS symptoms. “With the first reported case in the state, vigilance is crucial,” Yadav stated.

In a remarkable act of generosity, Yuvatha’s parents have decided to donate his organs. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed his condolences on social media, describing the boy’s death as tragic and commending his parents for their selfless decision. He also assured them of the government’s full support during this difficult time.
