Anil Deshmukh Will Not Step Down Unless Allegations Are Proved, Says Nawab Malik

Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik on Monday said that the Deshmukh will not step down unless the allegations against him are proved in an investigation.

His statement comes after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders demanding state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s resignation over former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh allegations against him.

Nawab Malik told ANI, “Param Bir Singh’s letter raises some questions as it was written after the transfer. There is no doubt that an inquiry will be launched into the allegation.”

He said that the letter was under suspicion as the dates mentioned in the letter to the Home Minister was in isolation due to him being COVID-19 positive.

“In the letter, he mentioned that he had met the Home Minister, but the Home Minister was on a visit to Vidarbha from 1 February to 5 February. He tested positive on 15 February and he did not meet anyone until 28 February. All these questions raise doubts about the letter,” Malik said.

“There is no question of resignation on the basis of a letter. The party will call only after investigation. Action will be taken based on the facts revealed in the investigation,” he said.

He said, “We know that Param Bir Singh held meetings in Delhi. The truth will come out after the investigation.”

Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh on Saturday wrote a letter to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray alleging that Deshmukh acted with “maliciousness” and asked suspended API Sachin Waze to collect Rs 100 crore every month.

In the letter, Singh, now posted as the Commandant General of the Home Guard, said that he was “made a sacrificial goat to divert attention from the real wrongdoers”.

He had alleged that Sachin Waze, who heads the Crime Intelligence Unit of the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police, was called by Deshmukh to his government residence several times in the past few months and “repeatedly instructed to assist in the collection of money”.

Waze, an assistant police inspector in the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU), who was transferred to the Civil Facilitation Center at Mumbai Police Headquarters after being named in the Mansukh Hiren death case, was remanded to NIA custody by 25 March. Due to his alleged role and involvement in driving explosive-laden vehicles.
