Arvind Kejriwal Loses In Delhi Election

Mumbai: AAP chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal faced a shocking defeat in his New Delhi stronghold, losing to BJP’s Parvesh Verma by 3,182 votes. This marks a dramatic setback for the IAS-turned-politician, who first rose to prominence through Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.
Kejriwal, embroiled in corruption allegations and the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ controversy, had held the New Delhi seat since 2013, when he famously defeated then-Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. He retained the seat in 2015 and 2020 with commanding margins. However, his loss now reflects AAP’s declining fortunes, with the BJP poised to return to power in Delhi after 27 years.
Parvesh Verma’s victory is a major milestone for the BJP. The son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, he has deep roots in the party and the RSS, where he served as a ‘shakha pramukh.’ During his campaign, Verma aggressively targeted Kejriwal, accusing him of neglecting local civic issues—a strategy that ultimately led to his landmark win.
