As Air Quality Worsens Again In Delhi, Kejriwal Mulls Extending Odd-Even Scheme

Mumbai: As there is no improvement in Delhi air quality it has been moving to ‘severe’ category Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday hinted at extending the odd-even road rationing scheme that is operational in the city.

When reporters asked about the initiative being given a likely extension in view of the rising air pollution in Delhi here Arvind Kejriwal said, “If required, we can extend the odd-even scheme.”

In an effort to reduce traffic congestion and tackle pollution, the Aud-Even scheme started in the national capital from 4 November and will run till 15 November. This initiative is applicable from 8 am to 8 pm. It was not in force on Sunday, November 10.

The Road Ration Scheme prohibits the driving of private vehicles based on the last digit of their registration number. Even-numbered vehicles are allowed to ply only on days, and those with odd numbers on odd days.

The Composite Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi and the National Capital Region re-entered the ‘severe’ category today due to not much improvement for the next two days. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR), the overall air quality of the national capital rose to 472 by 3:30 pm.

This is the third edition of the odd-even restrictions on private vehicles in Delhi. The first two versions of the initiative were introduced in 2016.
