Australia Chase Down 119-Run Target In Last Over vs SA As T20 WC Super 12 Stage Begins

Mumbai: Australia defeated South Africa by five wickets in the first Group 1 encounter in the Super 12 stage of T20 World Cup 2021. Australia chased down a 119-run target in the last over as Marcus Stoinis scored 24*(16).

Both the teams played the first Super 12 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Chasing 119, Australia started at a low pace, with skipper Aaron Finch scoring a run without sending Enrique Nortje back.

David Warner and Mitchell Marsh also lost their wickets after Finch and Australia reached 38/3 by the end of 7.5 overs.

Steve Smith kept his team’s hopes alive by scoring 35 runs in 34 balls. But Smith and Glenn Maxwell were also sent back at the end of 15.2 overs, taking the team’s total to 81/5. It was Stoinis who, in partnership with wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, finished the match with a boundary and took Australia home.

Earlier in the match, South Africa lost early wickets, with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood and Adama Zampa taking two wickets each. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma took the first wicket, followed by van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock.

Batter Aiden Markram then smashed 40 runs off 36 balls and brought his side to a decent total of 118/9.
