Babar Breaks Kohli’s World Record, Becomes Fastest To Reach 1,000 ODI Runs As Captain

Mumbai: Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has broken former India captain Virat Kohli’s world record for being the fastest batter to reach 1,000 runs in ODI cricket as captain.

With his 103(107) in the first ODI against West Indies, Babar crossed 1,000 ODI runs in 13 innings as captain.

This was Babar’s third consecutive century in ODIs; The last two are coming against Australia in Pakistan’s last ODI series at home. Babar scored 114 and 105* in the last two matches of the series against Australia.

Incidentally, this is the second time Babar has scored three consecutive centuries in the fifty-over format. In 2016, the Pakistan captain recorded scores of 120, 123 and 117 in three consecutive matches – all against West Indies in the United Arab Emirates.

And so, with his century against the Windies on Wednesday, Babar became the first player to achieve the feat in ODI history.

This was also Babar’s 17th ODI century in 87 matches.

However, this is not Babar’s only record during a century in the first ODI at Multan. The right-handed batsman also became the fastest batsman to score 1,000 runs as a captain.

He crossed the four-figure mark in his 13th innings as Pakistan captain, surpassing India’s Virat Kohli, who had reached this figure in his 17th innings.

Babar also surpassed South Africa’s AB de Villiers (20 innings) and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson (23 innings) for this feat. The Pakistan captain is currently ranked No. 1 in the ODI rankings for batsmen
