Bangladesh Create History, Beat Pakistan In A Test For The First Time

Mumbai: Bangladesh made history on Sunday by recording their maiden Test victory over Pakistan, triumphing by 10 wickets at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. This landmark win marks the first time Bangladesh has defeated Pakistan in Test cricket, ending a 14-match winless streak against the neighboring nation.

Led by captain Najmul Shanto, Bangladesh chased down a modest target of 30 runs in just seven overs to seal the victory. The match started with Bangladesh opting to field first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as Pakistan found themselves in deep trouble at 16 for 3 on the opening day. However, Pakistan’s middle order mounted a strong recovery, with Saud Shakeel scoring 141 and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan contributing a resilient 171, allowing the hosts to declare their first innings at 448 for 6.

In response, Bangladesh delivered a commanding performance with the bat, amassing 565 runs and earning a crucial 117-run lead. Veteran Mushfiqur Rahim played a pivotal role, anchoring the innings with a marathon 191 off 341 balls. He received valuable support from Shadman Islam, who fell just short of a century with 93, and Mehidy Hasan, who added a brisk 77.

Pakistan’s second innings unravelled quickly on the fifth day, with the team collapsing from an overnight score of 23 for 1 to being bowled out for just 146. Spinners Mehidy Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan were instrumental in this collapse, claiming seven wickets between them.

Bangladesh openers Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan then comfortably chased down the required 30 runs to secure a historic victory. This win is Bangladesh’s 20th in Test cricket and their seventh away from home, adding to their previous successes in the Caribbean, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, and New Zealand.

With this victory, Bangladesh moved past Pakistan on the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 points table, securing their second win in five matches during this cycle. Pakistan, having suffered their fourth defeat in six games, has slipped to eighth place, with a points percentage (PCT) of 30.55.

This triumph leaves Bangladesh with victories against nine of the 11 Test-playing nations they have faced. They are still seeking their first Test wins against India and South Africa.
