BCCI Awaits Government Nod on Bangladesh Tour Amid Uncertainty Over Bilateral Cricket Ties

Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to seek guidance from the Government of India regarding the Indian cricket team’s proposed white-ball tour of Bangladesh, as uncertainty continues to surround the series due to strained cricketing relations between the two nations.
According to a senior BCCI source, the board is not in a position to take a final call independently and will approach the government for permission and clarity before making any decision on the tour.
“We are working on it and will seek permission and clarity as far as the Bangladesh tour is concerned. We can’t take any decision on our own at this stage. No decision has been taken yet, but we will soon approach the government,” the source said.
The source also confirmed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally communicated with the BCCI regarding the proposed series and that discussions between the two cricket boards are ongoing.
“The BCB has written to us and they are in constant touch with us. Soon there will be more clarity,” the source added.
The BCB has reserved a window from August 29 to September 15 for the bilateral series, which is expected to feature three One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals. As per the tentative schedule, the ODI matches are slated for September 1, 3 and 6, while the T20Is are scheduled for September 9, 12 and 13. The Indian team is expected to arrive in Bangladesh on August 28 if the tour receives the necessary approvals.
However, the series remains contingent on the Government of India’s clearance.
The uncertainty stems from tensions that emerged earlier this year between the cricket boards of the two countries. The issue gained attention in January when Kolkata Knight Riders were directed to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their IPL 2026 squad.
Mustafizur, who had been acquired by KKR for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL auction, was the only Bangladeshi cricketer selected in the tournament. Following the BCCI’s decision, which was reportedly linked to prevailing circumstances between the two nations, reactions emerged from Bangladesh cricket authorities and officials.
Subsequently, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced that its national team would not travel to India for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, citing security-related concerns and guidance from its government. The board also requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate Bangladesh’s matches outside India.
The impact of the dispute extended beyond international fixtures, with reports indicating that the promotion and broadcasting of the IPL in Bangladesh were suspended indefinitely following the controversy.
India’s tour of Bangladesh was originally scheduled for August 2025 but was later deferred to September 2026. While both cricket boards cited scheduling considerations and international commitments as reasons for the postponement, the decision came amid broader diplomatic and sporting tensions.
The upcoming series is now being viewed as a significant opportunity to revive cricketing engagement between the neighbouring nations. The BCB has continued to push for the tour and remains hopeful that the bilateral assignment can proceed as planned, helping improve sporting relations after a challenging period.
For now, all eyes remain on the Indian government’s decision, which will determine whether the much-anticipated series goes ahead.
