The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Friday announced the suspension of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) following escalating border tensions with Pakistan. The tournament, which had reached its decisive stage with the final scheduled for May 25, has been halted with immediate effect, sources confirmed.
The decision came after the Punjab Kings (PBKS) vs Delhi Capitals (DC) match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium was abruptly called off on Thursday night. Fans in the stands were informed of the cancellation and directed to leave the stadium, while players were escorted back to their hotels under tight security. PBKS later confirmed the development on social media, stating, “Match has been called off.” The stadium exit reportedly saw fans chanting slogans like “Pakistan Murdabad.”
Meanwhile, the Indian Army has been actively countering multiple drone and ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) with Pakistan. According to military sources, Pakistani forces launched a series of drone and artillery attacks across the western border on the night of May 8-9. In response, Indian troops effectively repelled the assaults, downing over 50 Pakistani drones in a large-scale counter-drone operation.
A statement from the Indian Army emphasized their readiness to defend the nation’s sovereignty, saying, “Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border on the intervening night of May 8 and 9, 2025. Pakistani troops also resorted to numerous CFVs along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed, and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs. The Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation. All nefarious designs will be responded to with force.”
Additionally, Indian Armed Forces reportedly neutralized attempts by Pakistan’s military to launch large-scale drone and missile attacks on multiple Indian military installations across Northern and Western India on the night of May 7-8. Sources indicated that an air defense system in Lahore was also targeted and neutralized as part of these operations.
With the situation along the border remaining tense, the BCCI’s decision to suspend the IPL reflects the broader security concerns gripping the region.
