Ben Stokes To Opt Out Of IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Report

Mumbai: England all-rounder Ben Stokes is reportedly set to opt-out of the IPL 2022 mega auction in order to stay fresh for England’s summer season. Stokes, who was the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in 2017, has become the second member of England’s Test team to be pulled out of the tournament after captain Joe Root.

ESPN Cricinfo reported that two England cricketers have been dropped from the upcoming edition of the IPL. Stokes was not at his best in the recently concluded Ashes series against Australia – where he scored 326 runs and took only four wickets as Root’s men lost the high-profile series 0-4.

As London’s Evening Standard reports, “Stokes will be kicking out of this year’s tournament, which will feature 10 teams for the first time and will be preceded by a mega-auction that will take up a lot of venues.”

“Stokes has had a tough time over the years, with the death of his father Gade 13 months ago, a long break in 2021 to prioritize his mental health and fix a badly broken finger in the IPL. First,” it wrote.

Stokes was part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad in the first part of IPL 2021, where he was ruled out of the tournament due to a fracture in his finger. However, when the second half of the tournament resumed in the UAE, he did not return.

With a mega auction in place, while Root wasn’t expected to fetch eye-grabbing bids, Stokes would certainly have been on the radar of many franchises, with two new teams being added to IPL’s roster for season 2022. Stokes was bought for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore in IPL 2018.
