Bengal CM To Fight From Nandigram In Polls; To Vacate Bhawanipore Seat

The remaining three seats in Darjeeling will be contested by TMC allies, she said

Mumbai: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Friday released its list of 291 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled to begin from March 27 onwards.

CM Mamata Banerjee said she will be fighting from Nandigram instead of her current constituency of Bhawanipore in Kolkata

The remaining three seats in Darjeeling will be contested by TMC allies, she said.

Rejecting all speculation of comfort, the Chief Minister of Bengal announced that she would contest from Nandigram seat. He said, “Today we are releasing the list of 291 candidates including 50 women, 42 Muslim candidates. On 3 seats of north Bengal, we not putting up our candidates. I will contest from Nandigram,” she said.

Banerjee said, “Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay from Bihawanipore constituency will contest in the upcoming assembly elections. Bengali film director Raj Chakraborty will contest from Barrackpore, while TMC turncoat Sovan Chatterjee’s estranged wife Ratna Chatterjee has been fielded from Sovan’s seat.”

The Chief Minister further said that 79 seats have been reserved for SC candidates, while 17 seats are for those who belong to the ST community. The CM said that cricketer Manoj Tiwari will take on actor Kanchan Mullick of Shibpur and Santika Banerjee of Uttarpara and Bankura respectively. TMC has elected Madar from the Kamarhati constituency.

TMC ministers Firhad Hakim and Partha Chatterjee will contest from Kolkata Port and Behla West respectively, while Sujata Mondal, wife of BJP MP Soumitra Khan, has been elected from Arambagh. Actress Sayani Ghosh has been ticketed from Asansol South.

Nandigram is all set for high-level elections, as a report on the very first day confirmed that Suvendu will contest from the Adhikari seat on a BJP ticket. Notably, Nandigram is the stronghold of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari.

Adhikari held a key position in the TMC-led West Bengal cabinet and was in charge of the state’s transport, irrigation, and waterways in the Mamata Banerjee government. He, however, tendered his resignation and switched to BJP last year.
