Bhim Army Chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad To Contest Against UP CM Yogi In Gorakhpur

Mumbai: Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Aazad has decided to contest the UP Assembly elections against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Azad Samaj Party tweeted on Thursday.

“Taking forward the ideology “Bahujan Hitay-Bahujan Sukhay” of Babasaheb Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar ji and Matyavar Kanshi Ram Saheb, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshiram) declares Chandra Shekhar Aazad as its candidate from Gorakhpur (Urban) constituency,” said Azad Samaj Party in a statement.

Notably, the Bhim Army chief had met Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav last week. After meeting Yadav descendants, Azad ruled out any possibility of an alliance between Azad Samaj Party and SP for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2022.

Chandrashekhar’s party had announced that it would field candidates for 33 seats in the Uttar Pradesh elections after alliance talks with the Samajwadi Party failed.

Gorakhpur is considered to be the stronghold of Yogi Adityanath. The BJP leader and the current Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh had been winning the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat since 1998. He resigned from the lower house as soon as he became the Chief Minister in 2017.

The ruling BJP on January 15 released its first list of 107 candidates for the UP elections. The saffron party had fielded Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur (Urban) assembly constituency and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya from Sirathu assembly constituency of Prayagraj district.
