Bhumi Pednekar On Being Criticized For Darkening Her Skin In Bala

Mumbai: Replying to the criticism she faced over her character in her upcoming film ‘Bala’, Bhumi Pednekar said, playing different characters is what the actor is supposed to do.

“See, that was the character. When people see the film they will understand that it is not making fun of colours. It is a film that tries to break the bias that people have with fair-skinned India,” Bhumi told IANS here.

“I don’t think it is right or wrong. As an actor, I am doing my work. I can play different roles. For instance, in that doesn’t happen, in Dum Lagake Haisha it shouldn’t have been me because I had to gain 30 kilos for the film. It should have been somebody else playing the role,” she added.

“All my films are different and in all my films I look different. I am very clear. Even if I have to play a man I will do it. I’ll do whatever it takes,” she said. Bhumi stressed: “It’s my director’s prerogative. If he comes to me with an interesting part, why will I not do it?” she concluded.

Pednekar made her film debut as an overweight bride in the company’s romantic comedy Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Pednekar rose to prominence by portraying a headstrong woman in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), which ranks among the highest-grossing Indian films, and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), for which she received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Directed by Amar Kaushik film ‘Bala’ also stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam, and with Javed Jaffrey, Saurabh Shukla, and Seema Pahwa playing supporting roles.

The film is scheduled to be released on 7 November 2019.
