BJP MP Poonam Mahajan Slams Chowdhury On His Statement On Nirmala Sitharaman

Mumbai: A BJP member on Tuesday mounted a fresh attack on Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for his remarks the finance minister, saying it is he and not Nirmala Sitharaman who is “weak”.

Attacking on him the BJP MP Poonam Mahajan said, “All parties were together over the issue of rape and murder of Hyderabad doctor in the House yesterday. But, after a while, Adhir Ranjan Ji lost his patience. I condemn the remarks he made against our first woman Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It is very bad. This is a government where the maximum number of women have been given the post of minister.”

“It is a matter of sorrow that this is the party which was fighting with a woman to show ‘Nirbala’ (weakness). But the minister whose name has the word Nirmala gave her reply in a calm way. The example of a weakness is the Congress party,” she said added that “Nirbala toh app hai dada. ”

This remark was made after the statement of Chowdhury during a discussion on Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2019, on Monday.

“We do have a lot of respect for you, but sometimes we wonder if it wouldn’t be more apt to address you as ‘Nirbala’ Sitharaman instead of Nirmala Sitharaman. She heads the Finance Ministry, but we do not know whether you are even able to speak your mind or not.” The congress leader Chowdhury said earlier.

During her reply yesterday, Nirmala Sitharaman did not make a direct reference to Chowdhury’s comment but concluded her statement by saying she still is Nirmala and “sabla” (empowered)

“Under this government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, women are sablas,” she had said.

“You are raising question marks on her capability… She is here due to her merit,” he said, adding: “There can be a slip of tongue once. If he has a sense of regret, he should express it,” Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs Anurag Singh Thakur had lashed him.

Chowdhury, however, rejected the BJP’s demand and refused to withdraw his remark. He, however, said, “You can remove it from proceedings if you wish.”

The treasury benches also asked Chowdhury to apologise for his remarks.
