BJP’s Supriyo Quits Politics After Union Cabinet Ouster; Says ‘Not Joining Any Party’

Mumbai: BJP MP and ex-Union Minister Babul Supriyo, who resigned from Union Cabinet ahead of the latest reshuffle, on Saturday announced he was quitting politics and will soon resign as Member of Parliament.

Chollaam..Alvida (Goodbye). I’m not going to join any other political party. The Trinamool Congress, Congress, CPI(M) – nobody has called me. I’m not going anywhere…One need not be in politics to do social work,” Supriyo said while announcing his exit from politics on the social networking platform Facebook.

An ardent admirer of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Supriyo joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2014, two months before the 16th general election.

“Over the past few days, I have repeatedly consulted with Amit Shah Ji and (BJP president) JP Nadda ji about the decision to leave politics, and I am eternally grateful to them for inspiring me in every way,” the former singer said.

However, does it have anything to do with his removal as a minister? “Yes, there is,” he indicated, adding that he was also resigning as Member of Parliament.

Contesting from Asansol in West Bengal, Supriyo won the 2014 Lok Sabha election by a huge margin and repeated his feat in 2019 as well.

His command over the public helped him make it to the Modi cabinet as the youngest minister.

During his 7-year tenure as Minister, Supriyo handled the portfolios of Urban Development, Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, and Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

In May 2019, he also became the Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
