Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi said the weekly Friday prayer service usually involves large crowds of worshippers.

He did not provide more details and said an investigation was ongoing.

The incident comes just a week after the deadly explosion at the Said Abad mosque in Kunduz city of Afghanistan, which killed more than 100 people. It was the deadliest attack since the US military left Afghanistan.

The Islamic State of Khorasan Province (ISKP) has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

A regional affiliate of the Islamic State group, the ISKP is considered the most violent of all jihadist terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

Ever since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, attacks by ISIL-affiliated terrorists have increased signalling the possibility of a wider conflict between the two groups.
