BMC Officials Will Face 50% Salary Cut If Projects Delayed

Mumbai: To ensure that all civic work would get completed on time Brihamnumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Praveen Pardeshi has recently issued a circular asking the officials to get the projects done in time or else be prepared to lose 50 per cent of their salary.

Apart from the officials, the circular also warned the civilian contractors that if they failed to meet the deadline, they would also have to lose 20 per cent of the project cost.

The senior civic officer said on Thursday, “Pardeshi issued the circular last week, in which he asked the municipal officials to inspect the projects and get the work done within the deadline otherwise they would lose up to 50 per cent of their salary.”

“Contractors have also been warned that if they fail to meet the deadline, they will lose 20 per cent of the project cost. The reasons cited by officials and contractors in the circular for not meeting the project deadline It is said to be unrelated and very insignificant,” she added.

He said the circular issued by the civilian chief would serve as a deterrent and would motivate officers, especially engineers, to complete the projects within the time limit.

The move has been welcomed by the activists, who said that it will benefit everyone and help in deciding responsibility.

RTI activist Anil Galgali, who exposed several cases related to alleged corruption in the cash-rich BMC, said, “The civic body spends more than Rs 10,000 crore on public works every year, but it hardly meets the deadline of a project is.”

“Conversely, projects have been deliberately delayed to increase their costs. This happens because of unholy nexus between engineers and contractors. Hopefully, this wage reduction initiative will work and break the nexus.”
