Bride’s Family Beats Grooms For Giving INR 5000 For ‘Joota Chupai’ Instead Of INR 50,000 In UP

Mumbai: A wedding in Bijnor turned ugly when a groom was humiliated and physically assaulted by the bride’s family after he allegedly offered only Rs 5,000 instead of the expected Rs 50,000 during the traditional ‘joota chupai’ (hiding shoes) ritual.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Muhammad Shabir, a groom from Chakrata in Uttarakhand, arrived with his baraat (wedding procession) at the bride’s home in Bijnor. During the ceremony, the bride’s sister took Shabir’s shoes and demanded Rs 50,000 in exchange. In response, Shabir offered only Rs 5,000 and asked for his shoes back, which led to an altercation.
The situation escalated when some women from the bride’s family mocked Shabir, calling him a beggar for his “stingy” offer. Tensions mounted between the two families, and a physical confrontation soon broke out. Shabir’s relatives claimed they were locked in a room by the bride’s family and beaten with sticks.

However, the bride’s family presented a different perspective, saying the conflict intensified when Shabir’s relatives questioned the quality of the gold jewelry they had received as part of the wedding gift. According to the bride’s brother, Shabir’s family allegedly expressed that they valued money more than the bride herself.
In the aftermath of the altercation, the police were called to the scene. Officers intervened and managed to calm the situation before the two families were taken to the Najibabad police station. There, both sides presented their accounts of the incident to the authorities. After a thorough review, the families reportedly reached a mutual resolution.
The case highlights the intensity of traditional wedding rituals, and the pressures they can place on relationships between families.
