Cabinet Approves More Stringent Punishments Under Pocso Act

Mumbai: The Union Cabinet approved the amendment in the Protection of Children (Pocso) Act from sexual offenses for strict punishment for those found guilty of sexual offenses against children on Friday.

Addressing to the reporters  Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said in a press conference that children should be protected from sexual offenses. Cabinet works to make strict punishment for sexual offenses against children and sanction amendment in the Pocso act.

A new provision under the act also includes the death penalty for the aggravated sexual offense on a child.

Punishment has been enhanced in certain sections. “Attempt to inject hormones in children to make them major has been made an aggravated offense under Section 9 of the Pocso Act,” said Prasad.

Prasad said that the government approved the establishment of the National Commission for the Indian Medical System Bill, 2018. It wants to replace the existing regulator Central Council for Indian Medicine with a new institution to ensure transparency.

The related provision of the POSCO Act- Section 9 has been made more stringent, cabinet minister added.
