Canada Extends Ban On Flights From India Until Aug 21 Due To Delta COVID Variant Fears

Mumbai: Canada has extended the ban on incoming passenger flights from India until August 21 due to Delta COVID-19 variant fears.

The ban which was placed on April 22 was about to expire tomorrow (July 21) but now it will remain in place until August 21.

Notably, this is the fourth time the ban has been extended. On June 21, the suspension was extended for another 30 days and now another extension will be imposed for the next 30 days.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra told reporters during a news conference that the extension of the ban was aimed at the delta variant, which is believed to be the major strain of Covid-19 around the world.

“While progress is being made, the situation in India is still very serious,” he said. “The decision is based on advice received from the Public Health Agency of Canada, and will best protect Canadians from the increased introduction of the delta variant prevalent in India.”

In the meantime, the Canadian government intends to open the country’s borders to any fully vaccinated traveller who has completed a full course of vaccination with a Canadian government-approved vaccine at least 14 days before entering Canada. Have taken and those who meet specific entry requirements, the Government of Canada informed in a statement.

In the first phase, starting August 9, 2021, the government plans to allow entry to US citizens and permanent residents who are currently living in the United States and have been fully vaccinated.

This strategy will allow the government to continue monitoring the various forms of concern and vaccine effectiveness in Canada. Using these layers of security, the Canadian government can monitor the COVID-19 situation in the country, respond quickly to threats and make decisions to restrict international travel, the statement said.
