CBI Welcomes The Decision Of Vijay Mallya’s Extradition To India

Mumbai : Popularly known as Liquor Baron   Vijay Mallya, will be extradited back to India from United Kingdom ordered by London Court. Mallya is currently facing the debt of Rs 9,000 crore.

Chief Magistrate Judge Emma Arbuthnot of the Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London gave the order after acquiring the qualifications for fraud, conspiracy and money laundering registered against Mallya in India.

“I find the deferred charge in the request is extortion offense in the meaning of section 137 (3) of the extradition act 2003. I have found prima facie case in relation to three possible charges” Judge Emma Arbuthnot said.

The matter of extradition of Mallya has now been sent to the British Foreign Secretary. Mallya who left India on 2 March 2016 after saying he wanted to move to Britain to be closer to his children, has been alleged loan default of Rs 9,000 for the defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

Whereas earlier around 17 banks added a joint petition at the Supreme Court of India in March 2016 to try to prevent Mallya from leaving the country, but the Indian government indicated that he had already left.

Meantime now Vijay Mallya has a option to move towards higher court against the decision, the CBI and ED will have 14 days to file an appeal.

On the other hand CBI has welcomed the decision. “We expect to bring him soon and end the case. CBI has its own underlying powers. We worked hard on this matter. We are strong on law and facts and we were confident during the extradition case” CBI spokeperson said to ANI.

A day before, joint team of CBI and Enforcement Directorate, led by CBI Joint Director A Sai Manohar, left for UK to attend the proceeding.
