Centre Announces 10% Reservation For ‘Agniveers’ In CAPFs, Assam Rifles Recruitment

Mumbai: The Centre has announced a 10% reservation for ‘Agniveers’ in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles amid nationwide protests. The announcement comes amid the raging protest against the Agnipath scheme announced by the Centre on Tuesday.

The Union Home Ministry has also decided to give three years relaxation from the upper age limit prescribed to Agniveers for recruitment in CAPFs and Assam Rifles, while the first batch of Agniveer will get a relaxation of 5 years beyond the prescribed upper age limit, which the home ministry said. Also Read: Bihar Students’ Unions Call For Bandh Amid Agnipath Protests; RJD Extends Support

The Center had earlier assured that the future of Agniveers was not insecure, though after four years only 25% of the force would be retained as the rest would get priority in other recruitments.

Several BJP-ruled states, including Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, have already announced that they will give priority to firefighters in their state police recruitment.

Concerns have been expressed over the future of Agnipath with Agnipath providing employment for only four years. Large-scale violence, arson, damage to railway properties, death of a protester in police firing triggered nationwide protests in Telangana. With opposition parties vehemently criticising the short-term recruitment plan, the government came under pressure over the Agnipath scheme.

Union ministers and military service chiefs have been emphasizing that the scheme is a well thought out and beneficial one for those who want to join the defence, mainly due to misunderstandings that led to widespread protests.

The government on Thursday amended the Agnipath scheme and provided an additional two years of age relaxation for the first batch of Agnipath, which means instead of 21, youth between 17.5 and 23 years will be allowed to apply for the Agnipath scheme this year.
