Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced a 10 per cent reservation of vacancies for the recruitment of Agniveers in the Central Armed Police Forces and the Assam Rifles.

Protests against the plan unveiled earlier this week spread to at least 10 states, with agitators burning trains and damaging public property in several areas. One person was killed and several others were injured during one such agitation in the Secunderabad area of Telangana.

On Tuesday, the Centre unveiled the ambitious Agnipath scheme for the recruitment of those aged between 17 and a half and 21 in the Army, Navy and Air Force, largely on a four-year short-term contractual basis.

Amid the furore over the scheme, the government later raised the upper age limit for recruitment under the Agnipath scheme to 23 years for 2022.

After the completion of the four-year tenure, 25 per cent of the recruits from each batch will be offered regular service.
