Centre’s Decision To Withdraw AFSPA Is Beginning Of A New Chapter In The Future Of Assam: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Mumbai: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to decongest disturbed areas under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Assam, saying about 60 per cent of the state’s area will now be exempted from the purview of AFSPA. Also Read: Govt Reduces Areas Under AFSPA In Manipur, Nagaland And Assam

“I wholeheartedly welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to withdraw AFSPA from all areas of Assam except nine districts and one sub-division. I also express my deep gratitude to HM Shah for this bold decision. Now about 60 per cent of the area of ​​the state will be free from the purview of AFSPA,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that AFSPA has been in force since 1990 and this step marks the beginning of a new chapter in the future of Assam.

He said, “This is a testament to the significant improvement in law and order in the state. With peace prevailing, the North East is now on a new path of growth and development.”

He further said that due to the visionary leadership of PM Modi, this region is poised to become the new engine of India’s development “Ashta Lakshmi”.

“I also congratulate the people of Assam, who have believed in peace,” he said. Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the central government has decided to ease the disturbed areas under AFSPA in the states of Nagaland, Assam and Manipur after decades.
