Chandrayaan-2 Will Undergo Major Changes In September: K. Sivan, ISRO Chief

Mumbai: Chandrayaan-2 successfully entered the moon’s orbit on Tuesday, 20 August 2019 and according to the Chief of ISRO it is expected to soft-land on the Lunar surface on September 7th. The Chandrayaan’s major manoeuvres began at 0902 hrs IST and it took a total of 1738 seconds to enter the lunar orbit.

In a press conference, the Chief K. Sivan said, “There will be special events happening from September 2nd” as the lander will be separated from the orbiter and enter into 100 km x 30 km orbit around the moon. After that, the spacecraft will perform various complex braking manoeuvres to soft-land in the south polar region of the moon on September 7th.

The Chandrayaan-2 had performed brilliantly in today’s tricky situation. Today the spacecraft had to pass through a crucial milestone where if it approached the moon with a more-than-expected velocity it would have bounced off and got lost in deep space. Even the smallest error would have destroyed the mission. But the Spacecraft performed perfectly as the scientists wanted it to be and has entered the Lunar orbit.

The health of the spacecraft is monitored constantly from the Mission Operations Complex (MOx) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru from the support of Indian Deep Space Network Antennas at Bylalu near Bengaluru.

Many countries and individuals are curious about the reports that will be sent by ISRO after studying the other side of the moon. The craters on the Moon’s South Pole has not faced sunlight for billions of years and is considered to have about 100 million tons of water. Also, it is said that its elemental and positional set up will make a ‘suitable pit stop for future explorations’.

The Chandrayaan-2 Mission had come into light 11 years after the first Chandrayaan was launched. And with the Chandrayaan-2 ISRO has tried to attempt a soft landing which not more than three countries have achieved. Once the Spacecraft soft lands on the South pole of the moon, India will stand along with the countries: USA, China, Russia.
