China Attempted More Than 40,000 Cyber Attacks Maharashtra Cyber Department Issue Advisory

Mumbai: An advisory was issued by Maharashtra Cyber Department after Chinese cyber attackers allegedly tried to set up a huge phishing attack in India on Tuesday.

State’s Cyber department’s special IG Y Yadav said that over 40,000 cyber attacks were attempted in the past 4-5 days and most of them are traced back to Chengdu, China.

“In the last 4-5 days,resources on cyberspace of India especially related to information,infrastructure banking have been under attack from China. At least 40,300 such cyber attacks were attempted,most of them can be traced to Chengdu area of China,” said State Cyber Dept Special IG, Y Yadav.

The advisory said that the Phishing campaign is expected to impersonate government agencies , departments and trade associations who have been asked to oversee disbursement of governmental fiscal aid.

One of the spoof Email addresses used for the attack is ncov19@gov.in The subject line used for the phishing is : Free COVID19 testing for all residents of Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

The malicious group has reportedly over 2 million individual email IDs. Day before, Singapore based Cyber firm had warned Indian agencies that China may conduct a cyber attack on India.
