China Orders United States To Shut Down Its Consulate In Chengdu

Mumbai: The dispute between the United States and China continues on Friday as the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Friday that it had revoked the license of the US consulate in Chengdu, in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan.

The order called for the US mission to cease its operations with immediate effect.

The move comes in retaliation for the US order asking China to close its consulate in Houston following allegations that it was engaging in espionage activities.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that they have informed the US Embassy that Beijing has decided to revoke its license, keeping specific requirements for the US Consulate General to stop all activities.

The US on Wednesday ordered the closure of the Chinese mission in Houston “to protect American intellectual property and private information.”

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin called it “an unprecedented increase” and warned of retaliatory measures.

We strongly oppose the sudden demand to close the Chinese Consulate in Houston. This is a political provocation. We urge America to cancel this wrong decision immediately. Otherwise, China will have to respond with legitimate and necessary actions, ”the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
