Citizenship Amendment Act Will Not Be Implemented In Kerala: CM Vijayan

Mumbai: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday said that his government would not implement the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the state.

Speaking at a function organised to mark the conclusion of his government’s first anniversary celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram, he said “The government has a clear position on CAA. That will continue.”

He said those in responsible positions have often said that the law will be implemented.

CM Vijayan said, “The state government has a clear stand on this matter. There will be no change in this.” He said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act is against the secularism of the country.

“No one here has the right to determine citizenship on the basis of religion,” he continued.

Stating that the Constitution is supreme to decide such matters, he said the state government has taken its stand on the issue based on constitutional principles.

Last month, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said in Siliguri in West Bengal that the law would be implemented once the COVID-19 pandemic has ended.
