Citizenship (Amendment) Bill Is Patently Unconstitutional: P Chidambaram

This bill will be challenged in the Supreme Court if it passes the Parliament

Mumbai: Former finance minister and Congress senior leader P Chidambaram slammed centre over Citizenship Amendment Bill he said CAB 2019, , which has been passed by the Lok Sabha, is “patently unconstitutional.”

Chidambaram told ANI, “It is a sad day that elected MPs are being asked to do something unconstitutional. It is our job as elected MPs not to do anything that is unconstitutional.”

“If the executive is complex and Parliament cooperates with the authorities and is completely unconstitutional, the game will move to the judiciary and judges will have to pronounce the validity of the bill. Then this Bill will be struck down as it is patently unconstitutional,” ANI quoted Chidambaram saying.

Targeting the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Center, Chidambaram said: “The government says that 130 crore people are supporting them over the bill. Assam, Northeast, all other student activists, scientists and writers oppose the bill “T people? How can 130 crore people support them when the entire Northeast is in flames?”

Saying that the bill will be challenged in the Supreme Court if it is passed by Parliament, the Congress leader said: “This bill will be challenged in the Supreme Court if it passes the Parliament and I am confident that the Supreme Court judges will strike it down. ”
