CJI Gogoi Recommends Justice S A Bobde As His Successor

Mumbai: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has recommended Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the 47th Chief Justice of India in a letter to the government.

Justice Bobde has in the past served as Additional Judge at the Bombay High Court and Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. He was elevated as a Judge of Supreme Court on April 2013.

Official sources told PTI that Justice Gogoi had written a letter to the Law Ministry and Justice recommending Justice Bobde to be the next Chief Justice.

Justice Gogoi, who was sworn in as the 46th Chief Justice of India on October 3, 2018, will inaugurate the office on November 17.

Justice Gogoi’s tenure as Chief Justice is 13 months and 15 days while Justice Bobde, who will be sworn in as CJI on 18 November, will have a term of around 18 months.

According to the Memorandum of Procedure, which governs the appointment of members of the High Judiciary, “the appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be that of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court who is deemed fit to hold the office”

Under this process, after receiving the CJI’s recommendation, the law minister puts it before the prime minister who advises the president on the matter.
