Congress Condemns Arrest Of Former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah

Mumbai: The Congress on Monday strongly condemned the arrest of former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah under the Public Safety Act (PSA), saying that it is the “misfortune” of the country that leaders fighting for its unity and integrity have been put behind bars.

The congress response came after citing sources said that Abdullah has now been detained under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA), which enables authorities to detain anyone for up to two years without trial.

The Farooq Abdullah has been under house arrest since August 5 when the Center announced the cancellation of special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and the division of the state into state unions.

On Sunday, a stringent law was slapped on Abdullah.

Reacting to the development, Congress Rajya Sabha MP and Leader of Opposition in the House Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “I strongly condemn this. It is unfortunate that one of the oldest political parties in Kashmir (former) Chief Minister ( Has been) detained.

“Every Chief Minister and every political party is the Congress, National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party in Jammu and Kashmir, which have tried their level best to fight extremism. If there is no militancy today, it is because of these political parties Is and BJP is not, he told reporters.

He said that the leaders who fought against extremism for the unity and integrity of the country are put behind bars under the PSA, this is the “misfortune” of the country.
