Congress, NCP To Contest 125 Seats Each In Assembly Polls: Sharad Pawar

Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress will contest 125 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly elections next month, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said on Monday.

Pawar announced that the seat-sharing agreement between the grand old party and his 20-year-old organization had been finalized.

As per the arrangement, allies in 38 seats will be left to contest. There are 288 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

The NCP will give “new faces” a chance in elections, Pawar said. He said that some seats will be exchanged with Congress.

Earlier, in 2014, the two parties contested the state separately. The NCP ended the 15-year alliance when both parties were unable to reach a seat-sharing arrangement before the assembly elections.

The Congress won 42 seats while the NCP won 41 seats in the 2014 elections. The BJP emerged as the largest party in the state with 122 seats.

This happened to the Pawar-led organization after the two parties came out of high-profile after finalizing the seat-sharing agreement between the Congress and the NCP.

Many of those who have left have joined the BJP and some have sought refuge with the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.
