Could Not Have Asked For A Happier Start To Tokyo Olympics: PM As India Win 1st Medal

Mumbai: Within minutes of Indian Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu winning the country’s first medal at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the country’s resounding victory.

“Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian,” PM Modi tweeted with #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu opened India’s medal tally at the Tokyo Olympics after winning a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg category.

During her four successful attempts at the competition, Chanu lifted a total of 202 kg (87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk)
