The election was held on July 18. Like any other democratic country in the world, the President of India is also elected by the people but not directly.

All the representatives chosen by the people of India to the respective public offices on state and national levels, that is MPs and MLAs, vote to elect the President.

BJP-led NDA candidate Draupadi Murmu is seeing a clear edge over opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha in the presidential election and has been supported by several political parties.

Belonging to a tribal community in Odisha, Murmu will become the first tribal woman to hold the country’s top constitutional post if she wins the presidential election. The term of current President Ram Nath Kovind ends on July 24 and his successor will take oath on July 25.
