Covid-19 Curbs To Continue, Graded Easing Later, Says CM Uddhav Thackeray

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced that lockdown-like restrictions will continue across the state but will be relaxed in a phased manner.

The ongoing lockdown period in Maharashtra is scheduled to end at 7 am on June 1.

According to a statement released by the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Thackeray said that although the daily number of COVID cases has declined, precautions need to be taken to prevent an outbreak of coronavirus.

Justifying his government’s decision to lift and phase out the restrictions, Thackeray pointed to high positivity rates in 15 districts and rising cases of black fungus in Maharashtra.

“In 10 to 15 districts, the positivity rate is still very high. Besides, there is a threat of black fungus infection (found in recovering/recovered coronavirus patients).

“Today the daily case count has reduced and reached the numbers recorded in September last year. We still need to take precautions,” Thackeray said.

Maharashtra recorded 21,273 new COVID-19 cases on May 27, bringing the state’s infection to 56,72,180. According to the latest Health Department, 425 more coronavirus patients died, bringing the death toll to 92,225.

With 34,370 more patients discharged from hospitals, the number of recoveries increased to 52,76,203.

The Health Department reported that there are 3,01,041 active cases in Maharashtra.
