COVID-19 Expected To Become Endemic In 6 Months: NCDC Chief

Dr Singh stressed that the coronavirus disease will remain but the disease will be easy to handle

Mumbai: Sujit Singh, director of the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), has said that in the next six months, COVID-19 will become a part of everyday life. The top expert also said that a new version of the coronavirus alone cannot bring about the third wave.

Speaking exclusively to NDTV, the NCDC director said that the COVID pandemic has defied most predictions, but in the next six months, India will reach endemic status.

Dr Singh stressed that the coronavirus disease will remain but the disease will be easy to handle.

The NCDC chief stressed that if mortality and morbidity are under control, the disease can be managed.

However, he expressed concern over the upcoming festive season, which is expected to see huge crowds in markets across the country.

The news channel quoted Dr Singh as saying, “Just a new variant cannot cause the third wave. The factor would be a mix of behaviour and antibodies. There is some concern because of the festive season.”

Emphasizing vaccination, Director NCDC said that jabs are the biggest defence against the deadly infectious viruses.

“75 crore people have been vaccinated. If vaccine effectiveness is 70 per cent, then around 50 crore people in India have got immunity. A single dose gives 30-31% immunity. So the 30 crore people, who have received a single dose, are also immunised,” he told the channel.
