Curb Fake News On Coronavirus, Set Up Portal In 24 Hrs: Supreme Court To Centre

Mumbai: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Center to set up a portal within 24 hours to disseminate real-time information on the coronavirus epidemic to counter the panic being spread through fake news.

The top court, which saw that terror would destroy more lives than the virus, asked the centre to get trained counsellors and community leaders of all faiths to pacify the migrants housed in shelter homes across the country.

It also asked the Center to ensure that migration is prevented and people’s food, shelter, nutrition and medical needs are taken care of and cases of the virus are also followed, also known as COVID-19.

The Center told the apex court that the suggestion of spraying water and chemicals on migrants does not work scientifically to them and is not the right approach.

The top court, which refused to prohibit the High Courts from raising the issue of migrants, said they could monitor the issue more closely. However, it asked the Center to inform the government lawyers about the orders passed by the apex court to the High Court.

A bench of Chief Justice SA Bobde and L Nageswara Rao filed two PILs on the issue of migration through video conference, asking the Center to look into the letter petitions filed by Kerala MP Kasargod constituency Rajmohan Unnithan and an MP. From West Bengal on issues related to coronavirus.

The bench asked the Center to ensure that the duties of managing the shelter homes, where migrants are being placed, are entrusted to volunteers and not to the police and there should be no use of force or intimidation.

It asked the government that there should be adequate arrangements for drinking water, food, bedding and medicines in these shelters.
